Korean Community Legal Service

The Korean Community Legal Service was established by the Korean Australian Lawyers Association ("KALA") in 2011 to provide free legal advice to Korean nationals and ethnic Korean Australians residing in Australia.

The service was established after a successful pilot in 2010 in partnership with Marrickville Community Legal Centre identified that a significant number of Koreans residing in Sydney faced a common set of legal problems, and many would have neither the financial means nor the understanding of the Australian legal system to adequately seek assistance.

The service operates a monthly advice evening with a roster of 5 lawyers on the evening providing advice to up to 15 clients. Our volunteer law students take bookings and provide initial interview services on a weekly basis. It is held on the 1st Tuesday of every month from 6pm to 9pm, and consultations for free legal advice are by appointments only. The Consulate General of the Republic of Korea provides a venue and marketing for the service.

KALA Mentoring Program

KALA Mentoring Program is one of the best ways for students and graduate lawyers to connect, network and learn from industry experts, as well as obtain an insight into the practical realities of the legal profession.

For mentoring solicitors, it is an invaluable opportunity to participate in the fostering and the development of a future fellow legal practitioner.

KALA invites both new and previous participants in the Mentoring Program to join as either a Mentor (practicing solicitor with 3 or more years of PQE) or a Mentee (current law student or a law graduate with less than 3 years experience).

The participants will be divided into groups consisting of two Mentors and three Mentees, according to the area of expertise and interest. The groups are encouraged to meet at least once a month and we encourage participants to arrange additional group and one-on-one meetings across various groups. We further encourage all participants to maintain their relationships with their groups after the end of the program year.

If you would like to participate in the Mentoring Program, please email your enquiries and expressions of interest to koreanaustralianlawyers@gmail.com.
